I have tried working my way through the FAQ as well, but that just raises even more questions, I'm afraid. I stumbled upon TestDisk in my search for a golden answer, but I am afraid to fiddle around with the program too much myself as it looks like a program that could wipe a disk clean if you go to the wrong section. Because even if I were able to copy over the data, it's gonna take me more than 100 hours, and there's no guarantee that the process won't be interrupted in the meantime because of all the errors. And it tells me that I can't read data at more than 4-4.5MB/s, which is my second big problem.
I've tried using WD's own Lifeguard software as well, but it also ends prematurely. It will pop up a dialog to confirm the operation. diskgenius for dos -> testdisk(No LogProceedIntelAnalyseQuick Search, better than fdisk), gnome-disks norton ghost for dos -> fsarchiver savefs.
DiskGenius (AKA PartitionGuru Pro 3.7) - it worked very nice. Select the GPT protective partition, right-click it and select Convert to MBR Disk. Those more familiar with such procedures should find TestDisk a handy tool in performing. But before closing, I get more than 200 bad sectors on the drive. It will show you the basic situation of your hard drives on its main interface. I've tried using the native windows disk scanner, but it ends 3-4% through without any messages of any kind. When trying to copy from the WD to an other external drive, the copy window simply vanishes while "preparing for copy".

Then you should immediately create a copy of your failing hard drive using ddrescue onto the new one. a hard drive to save your valuable data on. a hard drive equal to or larger than the hard drive youre recovering from. I have an urgent problem that I would deeply grateful if you could help me with. When you have hard drive errors, its always better to have the following: a bootable USB running the same OS youre running.
